Costa Rica is home to one of the oldest democracies in the Americas. The government is divided between the executive, legislative and judicial branches. Noted for its friendly and peaceful people, Costa Rica has no military. In 1987, the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize was presented to then president Dr. Oscar Arias, who in 2006 became the first president to be re- elected.
